Important Information for

Divorce Counselors

“CDFAs can provide valuable information that allows the court to arrive at a fair, equitable, and just resolution–not just at the moment of trial, but down the road as well.” – Honorable Kathleen M. McCarthy, Family Court Judge.

Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts™

Founded in 1993, the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts™ is the most established and recognized designation in financial planning for divorce.

To become a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst™ (CDFA™), a candidate must successfully...

   •  Pass four exams based on the course offered by the Institute.

   •  Complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years.

    •  Be in good standing with his or her firm with any governmental
       agency.

No one knows better than you how complex and stressful the uncoupling process of divorce can be.  If someone comes to you when they are considering divorce, you potentially will have to help them through all three stages:

    •  Making the decision to initiate divorce proceedings,

    •  Dealing with their spouse and the attorneys during the divorce process,
    •  Creating a successful and meaningful post-divorce life.

In addition to the emotional issues, your client will be faced with serious financial challenges at each stage that will have both immediate and long-term impact.  Attorneys guide clients through the legal process, but rarely are they knowledgeable about tax implications, retirement plans, insurance needs, and the other financial matters that are unique to the divorce process.  A good lawyer working with a CDFA™ like myself can make even the most difficult case move forward in a cost-effective, timely, and less stressful way.

My support role as a Certified Financial Divorce Analyst™ is to review and give you and your client input on financial data, retirement plans, benefit plans, business records, tax returns, and all the other financial matters that have long-term implications if not handled right.

I will be able to provide valuable support at several points...

√  Evaluating the financial implications for different divorce settlements
before the case is even filed.

√   Helping you to convince your client to accept realistic expectations
        about their post-divorce financial situation.

√   Presenting charts and other evidence to show the financial impact
of different settlement options during client meetings, mediation
sessions, arbitration hearings, and if you go to trial.

√   Collecting data to prepare the financial affidavit and pre and post
         divorce budgets.

I will examine the financial issues of your client’s divorce and provide you with powerful computer-generated financial data to support their legal case.
